These groups are used in  the COSHH Essentials approach.

They are:

"A" the lowest degree of harm to health, for example, mild reversible irritation

"B" low to  moderate harm

"C" medium  harm

"D" high harm

"E" very nasty substances

There is also a "S" group for chemicals that can cause harm to the skin or eyes.
